A fairly common problem, especially for novice users.
Of course, there are technical problems due to which the laptop screen can go blank, but as a rule, they are much less common than incorrect settings and software errors.
In this article, I would like to dwell on the most common reasons why the laptop screen goes blank, as well as recommendations that will help you fix this problem.
1. Reason # 1 – power supply is not configured
To fix this reason, you need to go to the OS control panel Windows. An example of how to enter the power supply settings in the OS Windows 7 will be shown below, 8.
1) In the control panel, select the hardware and sound tab.
2) Then go to the power supply tab.
3) There should be multiple power plans in the Power tab. Go to the one that is currently active for you. In my example below, this is called balanced.
4) Here you need to pay attention to the time after which the laptop will turn off the screen, or darken it, if no one will press the buttons or move the mouse. In my case, the time is set to 5 minutes. (see mode 'from the network').
If your screen goes blank, you can try to turn on the mode at all in which it will not darken. Perhaps this option will help in some cases.
Also, pay attention to the laptop function keys. For example, in company laptops Acer, you can turn off the screen by pressing 'Fn + F6'. Try pressing similar buttons on your laptop (control key combinations should be specified in the laptop documentation) if the screen does not turn on.
2. Reason # 2 – dust
The main enemy of computers and laptops …
Excessive dust can affect the performance of the notebook. For example, laptops of the company Asus were noticed in this behavior – after cleaning which, the screen flickers disappeared.
By the way, in one of the articles, we have already analyzed how you can clean your laptop at home. I recommend reading it.
3. Reason number 3 – drivers / BIOS
It often happens that this or that driver may be unstable. For example, due to the video card driver, your laptop screen may go out, or the image on it may be distorted. I personally witnessed how, due to the video card drivers, some colors on the screen became dull. After reinstalling them, the problem disappeared!
Drivers are best downloaded from the official site. Here are links to the office. websites of the most popular laptop manufacturers.
I also recommend that you look into the article about finding drivers (the last method in the article helped me out many times).
B IOS could also be a possible cause. Try going to the manufacturer's website and see if there are any updates for your device model. If there is, it is recommended to install (how to update Bios).
Accordingly, if your screen starts to go blank after updating the Bios, then roll it back to an older version. When updating, you probably made a backup …
4. Reason # 4 – viruses
Where can we go without them …
Probably, they are blamed for all the problems that can happen with a computer and laptop. In fact, a viral cause, of course, may be, but the likelihood that the screen will go blank because of them is unlikely. At least I never saw it personally.
First, try to scan your computer completely with some kind of antivirus. This article lists the best antiviruses at the beginning of 2016.
By the way, if the screen goes out, you should probably try to boot the computer in safe mode and try to check it in it.
5. If all else fails …
It's time to carry to the workshop …
Before carrying, try to pay close attention to the time and character when the screen goes out: you are launching an application at this time, or it takes some time after the OS boots, or it goes out only when you are in the OS itself, and if you go in Bios – is everything okay?
If this screen behavior occurs directly only in the OS itself Windows, it may be worth trying to reinstall it.
Also, as an option, you can try to boot from an emergency Live CD / DVD or flash drive and watch the computer work. At the very least, it will be possible to make sure that there are no viruses and program errors.
With the best … Alex
