Microsoft will include in the authorization system Windows Hello on new Fujitsu notebooks, palm vein and capillary pattern authentication. The main goal of the innovation is to improve protection against cyber threats.
Microsoft and Fujitsu introduce innovative palm vein and capillary personalization technology. According to the developers, the proprietary PalmSecure system from Fujitsu will be used to identify the user. Support for transferring and analyzing data from appropriate biometric sensors will be integrated into the pre-installed OS Windows Hello system Windows 10 Pro on Fujitsu Lifebook U938 UMPCs.
Flagship Lifebook U938 – a new word in computer security
Fujitsu has announced the market launch of an updated model of the Lifebook U938 ultramobile computer based on the Kaby Lake-R microarchitecture. The basic version of the laptop is equipped with the now traditional fingerprint scanner, but the developers have gone further. The 'highlight' of the new flagship gadget will be the vascular palm pattern identification system.
This know-how is made possible by the close cooperation of Fujitsu engineers with specialists Microsoft. Fujitsu offered the already proven PalmSecure biometric system, and programmers Microsoft included support for palm authentication in the already familiar user identification application Windows Hello.
According to statistics from Advanced Threat Analytics, over 60% of successful attacks are possible due to compromised user credentials. As noted by the ATA, MS division specializing in preventive detection of cyber threats, it is precisely to minimize such risks that more and more advanced authentication methods are being introduced, from logging into a device with Windows 10 using a touch or a look, and ending with reading a palm pattern.
REFERENCE: Microsoft Windows Hello – hardware and software biometric authorization system in Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. PalmSecure is a hardware and software system for biometric authorization based on a palm pattern from Fujitsu.
The user brings his hand to the biometric scanner. A special PalmSecure OEM sensor uses near-infrared radiation to read the pattern of veins and capillaries and through the TPM 2.0 cryptoprocessor transmits the data from the scanner in encrypted form to the application Windows Hello. The application analyzes the received data and, when the vascular pattern fully matches the predetermined pattern, makes a decision on user authorization.
What is known about the laptop Lifebook U938
The updated version of the U938 will be equipped with an 8th Gen Core vPro CPU Intel based on the Kaby Lake-R microarchitecture. The weight of the novelty is only 920 g, and the thickness of the case is 15.5 mm. The 4G LTE module is optional. Unlike the basic model, which is equipped only with a fingerprint scanner, the authorization system of the updated version is complemented by a PalmSecure OEM palm blood vessel scanner. The device has a 13.3-inch display with a resolution Full HD.
The ultra-lightweight magnesium alloy black or red casing houses full-size USB 3.0 Type C and A connectors, HDMI, smart card and memory card readers, microphone and stereo combo outputs, and other interfaces. The UMPC has a powerful rechargeable battery that holds a charge for up to eleven hours of continuous use.
The operating system Microsoft Windows 10 Pro is preinstalled on the laptop with software-implemented support for biometric authorization based on the pattern of veins and capillaries of the user's palm. Data from biometric scanners are transmitted in encrypted form using a TPM 2.0 crypto processor.
Fujitsu has not yet disclosed information about the cost of the Lifebook U938 and the timing of the start of sales of the ultramobile laptop. We only know that the laptop is already available for pre-order in Europe, the Middle East, as well as in India and China. It is not yet known whether the new technology is planned to be used in other gadgets.
According to the specialists of the development companies, identification by the vascular pattern of the palm will help significantly increase the level of computer security, especially for employees working remotely.
