Obsidian Entertainment was founded in 2003 and has managed to remain independent by releasing AAA-grade games until now.
But it looks like the studio's financial situation at the moment is far from being the best. Curiously, this was facilitated to some extent by itself Microsoft, canceling in 2012 the development of the game Stormlands, on which the two companies worked together.
Note that of the latest Obsidian projects, two – the role-playing games of the Pillars of Eternity series – were funded through crowdfunding.
If rumors about the purchase of the California studio by the company Microsoft turn out to be true, it is possible that an official announcement of the deal should be expected in the near future.
