Today I have once again encountered ad modules that are distributed with many shareware programs. As a result, the computer starts to slow down, it is inconvenient to work on the Internet. More often than not, reinstalling your browser will do nothing.
In this article, I would like to focus on a universal recipe for cleaning and removing all these toolbars, adware, and other “infections” from the browser.
So, let's begin…
Recipe for cleaning browser from toolbars and adware
Most often, adware infection occurs during the installation of a program, most often freeware (or shareware). Moreover, quite often the checkboxes for canceling the installation – you can easily remove it, but many users, getting used to quickly pressing 'next-next', do not even pay attention to them.
After infection, usually foreign icons, advertising lines appear in the browser, can be transferred to third-party pages, open in the background of the tab. After launch, the start page will be changed to some kind of extraneous search string.
An example of a Chrome browser infection.
1. Removing programs
The first thing to do is go to the OS control panel Windows and remove all suspicious programs (by the way, you can sort by date and see if there are any adware programs with the same name). In any case, it is better to remove all suspicious and unfamiliar programs recently installed.
Suspicious program: adware appeared in the browser that approximately coincided in date with the installation of this unfamiliar utility …
2. Removing shortcuts
Of course, not all shortcuts need to be removed … The point is that the virus software can add the necessary commands to the shortcuts for launching the browser on the desktop / in the Start menu / in the taskbar. Those. the program itself may not be infected, but it will not behave as it should because of the damaged shortcut!
Just remove the shortcut of your browser on the desktop, and then from the folder where your browser is installed, bring the new shortcut to the desktop.
By default, for example, the Chrome browser is installed in the following path: C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Google \ Chrome \ Application.
Firefox: C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Mozilla Firefox.
(Information is relevant for OS Windows 7, 8 64 bits).
To create a new shortcut, go to the folder with the installed program and right-click on the executable file. Then select 'send-> to desktop (create shortcut)' in the context menu that appears. See screenshot below.
Create a new shortcut.
3. Check your computer for adware
Now it's time to start the most important thing – getting rid of ad modules, final cleaning of the browser. For these purposes, special programs are used (antiviruses are unlikely to help here, but just in case you can check them with them).
My personal favorite is the small utilities – Cleaner and AdwCleaner .
Developer site https://chistilka.com/
It is a compact utility with a simple interface that will help you quickly and efficiently identify and clean your computer from various malware, junk and spyware. After launching the downloaded file, click 'Start Scan' and the Cleaner will find all objects that may not formally be viruses, but still interfere with the work and slow down the computer.
Officer. website: https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/
The program itself takes up very little space (1.3 MB at the time of this article's release). At the same time, it finds the majority of adware, toolbars and other 'infections'. By the way, the program supports the Russian language.
To get started, just run the downloaded file, after installation – you will see something like the following window (see screenshot below). You only need to press one button – 'scan'. As you can see in the same screenshot, the program easily found ad modules in my browser …
After scanning, close all programs, save your work and click the clear button. The program will automatically rid you of most adware applications and restart your computer. After rebooting, it will provide you with a report on its work.
If the AdwCleaner program did not help you (anything can be), I also recommend using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. More details about it in the article about removing WebAlt'y from the browser.
4. Optimization Windows and browser settings
After the adware has been removed and the computer restarted, you can launch the browser and go to the settings. Change the start page to the one you need, the same applies to other parameters that have been changed by ad modules.
After that, I recommend optimizing the system Windows and securing the start page in all browsers. Do this using the Advanced SystemCare 7 program (you can download it from the office. Site).
During installation, the program will offer you to protect the start page of browsers, see the screenshot below.
Start page in the browser.
Once installed, you can analyze Windows for a huge number of bugs and vulnerabilities.
System check, optimization Windows.
For example, a huge number of problems were found on my laptop – ~ 2300.
There are about 2300 errors and problems. After fixing them, the computer started working much faster.
More details about the work of this program in the article about speeding up the Internet and the computer in general.
As a browser protection from banners, teasers, any advertising, which is so much on some sites that it is difficult to find the content itself for which you came to this site – I recommend using an ad blocking program.
