WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messengers for mobile phones, there is even a version for S40 phones (Nokia, Java platform) and it is still up-to-date. Neither Viber nor Facebook Messenger can boast of this. Is there a PC app, and can I make WhatsApp calls from my computer?
Can WhatsApp be installed on a computer
In order for the application to be installed on any operating system, you must first install the emulator program on your PC
There is an official WhatsApp application for personal computers. The following operating systems are supported:
- MacOS 10.9 and later;
- Windows 8 and higher (Windows 7 – not supported, the application gives an error when trying to install).
The appropriate version of the application can be downloaded from the official website.
After starting the program, you will need to synchronize the chat between WhatsApp on your mobile phone and PC. To do this, you need to launch the application on your smartphone, log into your account, select WhatsApp Web in the settings and scan the QR code from the application on your PC.
By the way, in addition to the application for personal computers, you can use the messenger on Windows and MacOS in the browser window. To do this, go to web.whatsapp.com and scan the QR code from your mobile on your PC screen.
Scanning the QR code is required to start syncing between devices
Important note: you can use WhatsApp on a PC only if the messenger is also installed on the mobile phone and is online (that is, connected to the Internet).
As for the calls, there is no such possibility in the version for computers. You cannot make video calls or regular voice calls.
You can only:
- exchange text messages;
- send text files;
- send voice messages;
- edit your contact list in the app.
Why such a restriction was introduced is unknown, but the developers, apparently, do not plan to remove it.
How to make WhatsApp calls from PC
You can make calls from the messenger when using the emulator on your PC
An unofficial method of making calls from a PC does exist. To do this, you need to install the WhatsApp application in the emulator Android (use the version not for the PC, namely for Android, the installation file must be with the .apk extension). If you believe the reviews, then the following emulators Android are great for this:
- Nox Player;
But this method has its drawbacks:
- You will also need a phone – an SMS message will be sent to it to activate your account (the code from the message will need to be entered into the WhatsApp program itself at the first start);
- not all computers work stably with emulators Android (for this, those with modern processors from Intel with support for virtualization technology are better suited);
- even if the application starts and works normally, it is not always possible to make calls, since not all microphones and webcams are supported in the emulator.
By the way, emulators Android for PCs are available not only for Windows and MacOS, but also for Linux. Accordingly, calls can be made on any computer, including from Windows 7.

In total, you won't be able to make calls in the official WhatsApp application for PC. But you can install the program for Android through the emulator. In this case, the functionality of the messenger will be exactly the same as on a smartphone.
